There was last week the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, first released on February 21, 1986 on the Famicom Disk System, only in Japan. For this occasion, during the last Direct, the HD port of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was announced for the Nintendo Switch, but according to the insider Jeff Grubb there is much more in the pipeline for fans. In fact, it would seem that Nintendo could announce something really interesting during this summer, to celebrate this anniversary in a special way.
Nintendo's silence on Zelda's anniversary day left fans bewildered, finding themselves celebrating the event alone. Unfortunately, this anniversary is close to that of the most famous Nintendo character in the world, or Mario, whose celebration is still underway. In fact, to prevent the two celebrations from overlapping, Nintendo, for a matter of pure Marketing, preferred to separate the two events and talk about Zelda later in the current year. It is precisely this situation that Grubb talks about in his article for VentureBeat, writing the following:
The first consideration when it comes to the timing of a Zelda anniversary is Mario. Nintendo's 35th anniversary celebration for Super Mario is still ongoing. Nintendo is unlikely to want the celebrations for Zelda and Mario to overlap. He would get more out of each by separating the two events.
This is still marketing. Nintendo will want to place The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD in the foreground. This is one of the main reasons why Nintendo hasn't talked about any other Zelda besides Skyward Sword HD in its latest Direct event. The company doesn't want other Zelda games to distract from its attempts to bring Skyward Sword back to life.
Sure, it could have released Wind Waker and Twilight Princess at the same time, but the company wants Zelda fans to all focus on Skyward Sword. So instead of creating a situation where other Zelda releases on Switch cannibalize sales that could have gone to Skyward Sword, Nintendo will create a steady cadence of releases to celebrate the series. This will start with Skyward Sword HD in July, but we should know what's coming soon after this summer.
Nintendo then proposed The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD to its community, so as not to take the attention off Mario again, at least not until the celebration of his anniversary is completed, which will end on March 21, 2021. That's why this summer there could be some juicy announcements for Zelda, without getting in the way, so that Nintendo doesn't lose us from the distraction of having two events at the same time.
