Sony has recently released a new update dedicated to PlayStation Store now forgotten PS Vita. After updating the firmware for PlayStation 3 released in December 2020, the news is now coming from some users who have noticed the Store change on their Sony portable consoles.
Released back in 2012, PS Vita has been downgraded to mere "legacy platform"Already in 2015, thus declaring it an obsolete platform only three years after its release in the West, leaving the players stunned. Two years after this announcement, Sony declared its intention to stop the physical production of the titles dedicated to the portable console, then coming to put a clear stop also to the production of the console itself in 2019.
Although therefore the production has been interrupted, the availability on the PlayStation Store of the titles dedicated to PS Vita has remained intact, even going to impulse itself over the years with the addition of new titles adapted specifically for the console. An example is Demon's Tier +, 2020 indie roguelike title and latest installment in the series Diabolical Mind Trilogy, developed by Diabolical Mind. And this was the last update done for Vita's PS Store so far.
After ten months, the news of a new update, not announced, dedicated exclusively to the PlayStation Store of Vita arrives these days. The change was only confirmed by users from some parts of the world such as New Zealand, UK, Australia and Japan. The change made is minimal but many hope that the Sony portable console will receive more attention, or that at least give a chance to those developers who still try to release their titles also for Vita.
Following the flop of Vita, Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in 2019 stated that the Japanese company is not interested in the creation of new portable consoles in the futureor. Although the sales and popularity of PS Vita have not been small, the company felt that the public was more interested in playing on smartphones and tablets rather than investing in a handheld console dedicated purely to gaming. Sony therefore preferred to focus on home devices, arriving today with the creation of PlayStation 5 which, despite the serious problems related to distribution, is equally having great success among users who have been able to purchase a copy.
