In the past few hours on the official account Twitter of EVO it was communicated that theEVO 2020 Online, a virtual event intended to replace the physical edition of the videogame-themed showcase, previously "canceled" due to the health emergency caused by the coronavirus, has been officially canceled. This time, however, through no fault of the pandemic. Various companies, and notable participants, withdrew from EVO 2020 Online after that Joey "Mr. Wizard " Cuellar, CEO and co-founder of EVO, was accused of sexual harassment. We report below what was communicated in the tweet:
In the past 24 hours, in response to the serious allegations recently made public on Twitter, we have made the first of a series of important decisions regarding the future of our company. Effective immediately, Joey Cuellar will no longer be involved in any way with Evo. We are currently working towards his complete separation from the company, relieving him of all responsibilities.
Moving forward, Tony Cannon will serve as CEO; in this position, he will assume a leadership role, prioritizing greater accountability throughout Evo, both internally and at our events.
Progress does not happen overnight, or without the courage of those who oppose misconduct and injustice. We are shocked and saddened by these events, but we are willing to listen to all allegations and commit to making any changes necessary to make Evo a better model for a stronger and safer culture, which we all seek. As a result, we will cancel the Evo online and work to issue refunds for all players who have opted to purchase a badge. In addition, we will donate the equivalent of the proceeds as promised to the HOPE Project.
