The persistent chatter that had been raised for some time about the setting of cyberpunk 2077 seems to have turned out, ultimately, as a false: the title in development for CD Projekt RED in fact, it will resume both the universe and the timeline from the boardgame from which it draws its source of inspiration, namely Cyberpunk 2020. To confirm this, among other things, is the same creator of the game, Mike Pondsmith.
The rumors that saw the video game differ from the tabletop RPG seem to have been born, in reality, due to a misunderstanding that involved some words spoken by Pondsmith himself. During the conference for the PAX West, in fact, prompted by some questions posed by the interviewers, he reported how the continuation of the classic timeline will be guaranteed despite some things that could be altered in some way.
Let's say that at this point, we plan to continue the timeline and you will see the things that you saw in 2020, but they will somewhat be changed. And that will affect both the timeline and also the fact that cellphones went from the size of the brick to the size your thump [sic.], And than again to the size of a brick. So you are going to see some shifts in technology.
For some obscure reason, the SegmentNext portal has misunderstood this quote, thinking that Cyberpunk 2020 and the next title signed by CD Projekt Red would not have been united by the same timeline. Just recently, however, in an exasperated appeal to the community of Reddit, Mike Pondsmith himself commented confirming that both the tabletop RPG and the video game will share the same narrative universe.
"Yes, it's all the same timeline." –Maxmike Pondsmith from cyberpunkgame
Recall that, although the launch window of the title has not yet been revealed, Cyberpunk 2077 will soon be released for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
