Baldur's Gate 3 will be linked to previous installments in the series

In the past hours Sven Vincke, boss of Larian Studios, confirmed on Reddit that the new Baldur's Gate 3 will draw inspiration from the previous chapters of the series, as regards the narrative component. Specifically, he would have been asked if the new work created by the Belgian development team was somehow connected with the story of Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2 and expansion Throne of Bhaal. Here is Sven Vincke's answer:

We don't really want to spoil anything, but we wouldn't call it Baldur's Gate 3 if there wasn't a link. I would just like to say that we touch the story of BG 1 and 2 in meaningful ways, there are characters who will return and what happened in BG 1/2 / tob will bring us to BG3. You won't necessarily see it at the beginning of the adventure, but you will quickly understand it once you enter the game.

According to the latest rumors, BG3 will be set after the events of Descent in Avernus, about 100 years after the events of Baldur's Gate 2, so even if there could be links between the various chapters of the series, and even the return of the characters, Baldur's Gate 3 it will not be a direct sequel.
