Apu, historical character of the animated series "The Simpsons“, Title of the Jet Market, could vanish altogether, at any moment. This, at least, according to the statements of one of the producers of the series, Adi Shankar.
Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, this is the full name of the character of Indian nationality, according to a documentary published in 2017 entitled "The Problem with Apu“, Embodies cultural and racial stereotypes. Precisely following the documentary, the creators of the series were attacked by fierce criticisms, towards which, at first, the creators themselves had raised a shield, defending their creative freedom.
Things now seem to be changing. This is what was stated by Adi Shankar, one of the producers of the series, also of Indian nationality, like Apu himself:
Apu will be dropped entirely. It will not be a case, but it will be let go to avoid further controversy.
The conditional that we used in communicating the news to you is more to be interpreted as a hope that this will not happen. Apu represents stereotypes as well as all the other characters in the series, so it's possible that the creators of “The Simpsons” are rethinking it. We cross our fingers (and who tells Homer now ?!).
