He recently passed away at the age of 88 years the British actor Ian Holm, known to the general public for the role of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins in the film trilogy de The Lord of the Rings, a role that he later reprized also in the prequel trilogy The Hobbit. The death was confirmed by his agent, who explained how the actor had long been battling a serious illness related to Parkinson.
In addition to the aforementioned trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, Holm has distinguished himself in many other films such as The Man in the Iron Mask (1977), Alien (1979), Brazil (1985), Dancing with a Stranger (1985), Enrico V (1989), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Hamlet (1990), The Naked Lunch (1990), King George's Madness (1994), The Fifth Element (1997), Sweet Tomorrow (1997) and The Day After Tomorrow - Dawn of the day after (2004).
Holm was also nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Supporting Actor for the movie Moments of glory and in 1998 the queen Elisabetta II conferred on him the title of "Baronet" for artistic merits.
