According to what has emerged in the last few hours, Xbox Series X and S will allow players to selectively uninstall different parts of the gamesin order to free up storage space. Confirmation comes directly from Jason Ronald, director of program management at Xbox, who recently discussed the new peripheral functionality during a podcast with Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb from Microsoft. We report his words in detail:
Even beyond the hardware, we've actually made improvements to the UI to make storage management easier. For example, one of the new features we're adding is actually, if a title chooses to support it, the ability to selectively uninstall different components of the game.
So, let's say you play a campaign and then want to focus solely on multiplayer. If the developers have chosen to support it, you can actually uninstall the campaign itself so that you have more control over how you are actually using your storage, so that you really get the most out of the console and available storage.
Furthermore, Jason Ronald he repeated several times that this is a choice reserved for developers, so at the moment it is not clear which and how many titles will support this very interesting features in the immediate future. We remind you that Xbox Series X will ship with 1 TB of internal memory, while Xbox Series S will have available "only" 512 GB. Although the operating system occupies about 20% of the memory available in the SSD on the "most powerful console in the world", leaving just over 800GB available to the user, we do not know how much Series S memory is reserved for system files, but Ronald said he expects smaller installation sizes overall on the cheapest console.
