Today the independent studio Facepunch, developer of the famous survival sandbox Rust, announced a heavy data loss. The cause is a violent fire broke out in France, which has irreparably damaged many European game servers, making any effort made to restore, even partially, lost data in vain. The flames have spread to the datacenter OVH of Strasbourg during the early hours of the morning, destroying one of the four buildings in which the European servers were located and causing the offline of at least 25 of them.
Fortunately, the staff evacuated the building in time and no injuries were found. After notifying players of the destruction caused by the fire, Facepunch confirmed via Twitter the total loss of data and the impossibility of recovering them. The studio is attempting to bring European servers back online, and one has been planned recovery activity of the three buildings that remained intact in the OVH center by 19 March. The exact amount of players affected by the fire is not yet known, but everyone involved will see their progress for a month deleted.
This is a great misfortune for Rust, who has seen his own popularity grow in recent weeks, thanks to both the work of some influencers streamer, who have dedicated themselves to the title on their own channels, both of the next release of Rust Console Edition, the version for PlayStation 4 e Xbox One, which was fixed in the spring. The data of the rankings of Steam however, they showed a constant overall number of active players despite the severe damage suffered by European servers. Launched in 2013, Rust is a survival game that tests users, leaving ample freedom of choice on how to tackle the adventure and explore the ecosystem, and is also suitable for lovers of the mode PvP and strategies.
Update:
We've confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH data center fire. We're now exploring replacing the affected servers.
Data will be unable to be restored.
