Psychonauts 2: the acquisition of Microsoft “saved” the project

According to what emerged in the past few hours, the acquisition by Microsoft products in 2019 of Double Fine had a major impact on the new Psychonauts 2. Tim Schafer, founder of the well-known US videogame company, told GI.biz that the acquisition allowed the developers to bring several additional content for the platform game, which otherwise would have been permanently canceled. We report in detail the words of Schafer:

With Psychonauts 2 we have exhausted our budget, cutting a lot of content and stopping the boss fights. Now we are able to put them back in place. Being able to complete the game the way it was intended was very important to us.

When you only have a certain amount of time and money, you may find yourself forced to "jump" from one part of the game to the other, working on the art before you are ready with the design. But now I can't wait for this new era to begin.

Psychonauts 2 it was initially funded by Fig, raising over $ 3,8 million before Microsoft's recent acquisition. The game, announced way back in 2015, is expected to debut by the end of this year. Furthermore, given that Double Fine now it is owned by the Redmond house, it can fully dedicate itself to the good of the project, without worrying about tight deadlines and reduced budgets. We remind you that Psychonauts 2 will debut on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC by the end of 2020.
