Returnal: a new gameplay video shows us the combat system

After showing himself in an exciting gameplay video, Returnal, one of the great exclusives for PlayStation 5 waited in the coming months, back to being talked about thanks to new details on the combat system, directly from the Playstation YouTube channel. The developers of Housemarque they aimed at create a unique mix of play styles, which combine explosive arcade action, responsive controls and a "hellish gameplay“, All in the third person. Then it seems that there will be fast and frantic fights and intense shootings, but also one rich exploratory component which will develop through procedurally generated environments.

We created Returnal to have a challenging and rewarding experience, with enough variety and depth to keep you always coming back for "another try". Selene will have many weapons and devices at her disposal to survive on the hostile alien planet Atropos. Some he took with him, others he found and made his own. The video shows some of the various skills you will find throughout the Returnal story, which we will tell you about later. The game features a number of basic weapons that will be upgraded throughout the game. For example, the Spitmaw Blaster living weapon starts out as a classic shotgun you all know and love. As you progress, however, you will unlock and add various upgrades to the weapon, each providing a unique gameplay modifier. These weapon traits are tailor-made for each type of gun, so your Spitmaw Blaster may get explosive bullets or puddles of acid on impact, unlike other players'; while the Electropylon Driver could extract extra loot from enemies or generate shields for the player. These characteristics of the weapon can also be accumulated. The combined effects can lead to many amazing results that can bring unique benefits and new play styles to explore.

In the gameplay mechanics it will be then the new DualSense is also important: thanks to the adaptive trigger of the controller, just press L2 halfway to aim down and use the main fire of the weapon that we will have equipped, while by pressing it all the way we will be able to access its alternative fire mode. The title will feature more than 10 basic weapons, customizable with over 90 different combinations. Another interesting mechanic is the one called Chtonos, an alien device that will automatically spawn new weapons at the start of levels based on the progress we've made. However, not all the objects we encounter on our way will help the protagonist Selene in her adventure. Some elements, called Parasites, have both positive and negative effects. We will have to think twice before collecting a Parasite which, for example, regenerates our health, but will also cause enemies to leave a pool of acid when defeated.

Returnal therefore promises, as the new trailer also demonstrates, to be a decidedly interesting roguelike title also from the point of view of the combat system. March 19th is near, we are sure that we will see some good ones
