Below you will find a guide on recruiting all eight Main Characters in the game and all the information related to them.

The "Conflicts of Personality" entries may contain minor plot spoilers

Anders
Class: Mage
Recruitment: It is mandatory, you group in act 1, after completing the quest "Tranquility".
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, and on more than one occasion
Personality Conflicts: Will not get along with Carver, Fenris, and Sebastian.

Aveline
Class: Warrior
Recruitment: It is mandatory, you will join the group at the start of the game.
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, but not until Quest "The Last Straw"
Personality Conflicts: Will not approve if you fully support Merrill in her Quests.

Bethany and Carver
Class: Mage (Bethany), Warrior (Carver)
Recruitment: They are required and will join the party at the start of the game.
Can they leave your party ?: Yes, there will be an inevitable accident for one of them in the Prologue. The survivor will remain in our group beyond Act 1.
Personality Conflicts: Bethany will fight Fenris in Mages Quests. Carver will fight with Anders and Merrill in the main story of the Mages.

Fenris
Class: Warrior
Recruitment: It is optional, you must complete the Quest "A Bitter Pill" in Act 1.
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, on more than one occasion.
Personality Conflicts: Will have trouble with anyone who wears Wizard robes or wizard sticks, Hawke included.

Isabela
Class: Thief
Recruitment: This is optional, you must complete the "Fools Rush In" Quest.
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, at the height of Act 2 there are three moments when you can leave us.
Personality Conflicts: There will be a slight discussion of Law and Order with Aveline, but nothing to worry about.

Merrill
Note: If you don't choose the Mage Class for Hawke, Merrill is the best alternative if you want to cause great magical damage to enemies.
Class: Mage
Recruitment: It is mandatory, you will be enrolled by completing the Quest "Long Way Home" at the beginning of Act 1.
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, but not until the Quest "The Last Straw".
Personality Conflicts: Will argue with Fenris and Carver over her being a sorceress. If he supports his Quests in Acts 2 and 3, Fenris and Carver will leave you.

Sebastian (DLC)
Class: Thief
Recruitment: It is optional and can be recruited by completing the "Duty and Repentance" Quest.
Can you leave the group ?: Yes, but only during the Quest "The Last Straw".
Personality Conflicts: He doesn't like Anders.

Varric
Varric brings with him a weapon, the Biance, a Bow capable of increasing its power whenever Varric levels up. He is an Archer capable of delivering powerful assault and debilitating attacks, which allow the party to use unique tactics.

Class: Thief
Recruitment: It is mandatory, you will join the group at the beginning of Act 1.
Can you leave the group ?: No.
Personality Conflicts: None, will get along with everyone.
