Introduced as an exclusive feature for Pixel Launcher, the At a Glance widget has finally arrived on all Android phones. It's a simple but extremely useful widget for getting important information quickly without opening any apps. Unfortunately, the widget appears not to work properly for many Android users. If Google's At A Glance widget doesn't work for you too, you've come to the right place.
Users face a number of widget related issues. While some see a completely blank widget, important information such as the weather is not displayed in the widget for others. Let's find out the various solutions for when the At A Glance widget doesn't work on Android.
1. Restart your phone
Often the At A Glance widget starts working fine after simply restarting the Android phone. Stop everything you are doing on your Android phone and restart the phone.
2. Add the widget again
The new addition of a widget is known to solve problems with any widget. You need to remove the widget and add it again.
To do this, tap and hold the At A Glance widget until some options appear. Tap the Remove button or the Remove icon depending on the available option.
To add the widget again, touch and hold any space on the home screen. Add Widget from options. Tap Google and then At A Glance. Some launchers may require you to press and hold the widget and drag it to the home screen.
Suggestion: you can add a new widget first, then remove the duplicate widget.
3. Try a different Launcher
Generally, the At a Glance widget should work with any Android launcher. To be safe, try using it with a different launcher.
4. Clear cache and data
Since the At a Glance widget is part of the Google app, you will need to clear the cache and data for the Google app. Do not worry. It will not delete your personal data. However, it will reset some of the Google app settings to their default values.
To clear the cache and clear data for the Google app, follow these steps:
- Open Settings and go to Apps & Notifications or App Manager.
- In All Apps, tap Google.
- Tap Storage followed by Clear cache. Then hit the Clear Data button.
- Restart your phone. This should fix the widget. If the problem persists, add the widget again as shown above.
5. Grant the necessary permissions
If the At a Glance widget doesn't display your calendar or weather information, check and make sure it has the necessary permissions. For this, go to Settings> Apps. Tap Google.
Tap Permissions. Make sure the app has location and calendar permissions.
6. Uninstall the google app updates
This is a similar solution to uninstalling any app. However, as the Google app is pre-installed on almost all Android phones, it cannot be completely uninstalled. You can only uninstall recent updates.
To do this, go to Settings> Apps> Google as we did in the previous two methods. On the Google app screen, tap the three-dot icon at the top and select Uninstall updates. Restart your phone.
Then go to the Google Play Store, search for Google and hit the Update button. This should update the app.
7. Remove a second account
Have you recently granted family rights to any other Google Accounts? If so, this could be why calendar and weather information is missing from the widget. Revoke household rights from the second account in the Google app.
8. Reset the app preferences
Finally, if nothing works, you should reset the app preferences to your Android phone. This will restore all settings, including location, network, etc., to their default values. Your personal files will remain intact.
To do this, go to Settings followed by System (General management. Tap Reset followed by Reset app preferences or Reset all settings depending on the available option.
Alternatively, go to Settings> App. On the All Apps screen, tap the three-point icon and select Reset app preferences.
Apps vs Widget
Widgets are tiny information boxes. They keep useful app data ready for you on your home screen. This is one of the main differences between an app and a widget. If a widget stops working, you will need to open the app to access the information. Fortunately, it's easy to fix when Google's Widget At A Glance isn't working on Android.
