    Suicide Squad - Review

We were invited to the splendid location of Isola Tiberina, in the heart of Roma, for an unparalleled event: the world premiere of Suicide Squad in worldwide connection with London and other European cities, we listened to the opinion of the main actors of the film and we were able to ask questions to these modern “heroes”. The event was taken care of down to the smallest detail and we greatly appreciated the involvement of the participants, having fun admiring the cosplayers and the multiple choice question competitions. After an afternoon of games we went to the cinema to enjoy the movie in the original language with Spanish subtitles.

    Suicide Squad - ReviewMass suicides

Without spoilers to bother you, we tell you that in the first half of Suicide Squad we witness a presentation of the characters in DC Comics style: long flashbacks show us the past of the protagonists (on which obviously Deadshot e Harley Quinn) and the choices that led them to where they are now (mainly in prison). Amanda Waller is the woman of steel in this film: the mission of this government agent is to set up a team of super-gifted (and if possible metahumans), to be brought into action in case the "next" Superman is not kind as the previous one (we remind you he died against Doomsday in the Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film). The squad consists of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Katana, Enchantress, Killer Croc, Slipknot and Captain Flag, the latter the only true soldier of the group. Naturally mismatched, Waller will soon discover that managing her will not be easy at all but, on the other hand, each member is an expendable pawn for her, hence the name. Suicide Squad!

    Textures that intertwine!

As you know, the film is set after the events of Batman V Superman: a cameo of the Dark Knight was a must and here it is Ben Affleck take on the role of the Caped Crusader for a few intense scenes, in which he shows us how a professional can put his own voice even in marginal scenes like these. The same could be said of Jared Leto who, leaving the microphone at home, shows us his idea of the Joker: the character in question was certainly at the center of the scene, so much so that we have seen him appear in all the trailers of the film. His presence in these clips was so incisive that many thought of the Joker as a dominant figure in the cinecomic: nothing further from the truth, given that he appears for only fifteen minutes throughout the film. Obviously it is not possible to make comparisons between Leto's performance and that of Ledger in Nolan's "The Dark Knight".: we can however tell you that the character of the craziest clown ever was respected in the best possible way and that this interpretation, albeit short-lived, seemed to us very relevant to that of comics. Throughout the film there is this sort of presence, given by the messages on the cell phone of Harley Quinn until the appearance in the most disparate moments, which makes the Joker a real ghost, feeding the legend. The performance of Will Smith who never really contradicts himself, giving us a controversial and profound character, merciless at work as well as loving with his daughter.

    A team… without a purpose!

Speaking out of the teeth, the film suffers from quite a few problems. The first is certainly the width of the team: too many characters to tell are difficult to manage. The second is undoubtedly the lack of a real enemy in the film. Let's be clear: the so-called Villain exists, the problem is perhaps that the personal stories of the various protagonists are more beautiful (some, like Katana, left with no real storyline behind them), so much so that it becomes annoying to follow the main storyline. The feeling we had throughout the film can be summed up with the phrase of one of our colleagues who exclaimed at the end of the film “Nice trailer, can you have the movie now?". The actors do their best and we assure you that the acting was almost perfect, But unfortunately there is no main storyline worthy of subplots that, for better or for worse, keep you glued to the screen. It was a bit like seeing the best chef in the world having to prepare a dish worthy of a great evening without the right ingredients. Well thought out special effects and soundtrack and pay attention to the slightly irreverent style of the film. Overall it is a film that we would see again only to grasp the nuances of the protagonists, certainly not for the plot, as it is very little present.
