The MSI MAG X570S TORPEDO MAX is a mid-range solution, at least in relation to the AMD X570 chipset, but it equips a robust 12 + 2 phase VRM with 60 Amps per phase to fully support any processor, including the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X with its 16 cores and 32 threads. Without neglecting some overclocking margin and useful options such as debug LEDs and BIOS flash. It also sports a premium design, does not miss a pinch of RGB and promises high performance for a interesting price in relation to the offer. It is in fact available for just over € 200 which are not bad for all these features.

Sure, there are trade-offs, but considering we're talking about a largely gamer-oriented motherboard they don't seem to weigh that much. The slot PCIe there are only two, but they are both PCIe 4.0 thanks to chipset improvements, and are more than enough for the vast majority of gaming computers, now almost exclusively oriented towards single-card configurations. In addition, to ensure ample expansion possibilities, there are two PCIe 3.0 slots for sound cards, controllers, capture cards and so on.

Also the M.2 slots are 2 and in this case only one is PCIe 4.0, but the speech does not change. Thinking about the typical configuration, even at high-end, we are already at the top thinking about a configuration with two SSDs: one of the latest generation, designed to make the most of upcoming technologies such as DirectStorage, and a secondary one, of the PCIe 3.0 type, but still extremely rapid. As anticipated, we are faced with a mid-range motherboard albeit not exactly cheap, thanks to the high cost of the AMD X570 cards, the massive passive dissipation and a design work similar to that seen with the Intel counterpart of this model: the MSI MAG Z590 TORPEDO MAX.

Note, in particular, the material of the radiators and heatsink included in the first M.2 slot and in the PCIe 4.0 one, which turns from gray to an elegant blue depending on the type and angle of the ambient lights. All embellished with black stripes and details that run diagonally, from the chipset to the backpanel through the heatsink for M.2 SSD, and give momentum to theaesthetics than what would otherwise be a rectangle equal to many others. Also worthy of note is the choice of a military-style color and friezes, which refer to the excellent MAG VAMPIRIC 300R PACIFIC BLUE case, another half of a perfect match for those who appreciate matching configurations.

The chipset, protected by a thick armor, also enjoys a hint of RGB lighting, not excessive but suggestive and is obviously compatible with the Mystic Light RGB LED technology, such as the 2 RGB connectors and the 2 RAINBOW connectors that allow you to create articulated luminous suggestions.

Performances

To test the MSI MAG X570S TORPEDO MAX we once again relied on the AMD Ryzen 5950X, the most powerful consumer processor around, perfect for evaluating any limitations of a motherboard with its 16 cores and 32 threads. All combined with the classic 16 GB of G.Skill Trident Z Royal 3600 Mhz and CL16 memory of our AMD configuration. As a video card, however, we relied on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, which can be used without problems for tests in 1080, 1440p and 4K. With this configuration, the AMD CPU has almost always worked using the Precision Boost Overdrive, pushing consistently to 5050 Mhz, without the MSI motherboard's VRM ever showing signs of slowing down. There temperature it remained in fact around 50 degrees in gaming, reaching a maximum of 53 degrees under stress, and it did not move even pushing the CPU to 5150 MHz thanks to the automatic overclock that allowed us to gain between 1% and 2% in gaming and multi-threaded performance. This with a Scythe Mugen 5 heatsink, undoubtedly powerful but certainly not among the top of the range. Nothing to report instead, for the noise of the card, obviously non-existent given the removal of the active dissipation. In all of this we have achieved scores in some cases above the average of the range to which this card belongs, both in synthetic benchmarks and in games. In particular, we hit excellent framerates in Gears 5 and Dirt 5, while we had to settle for average scores with Assassin's Creed Valhalla and we were faced with some anomalies, at all resolutions, with Watch Dogs: Legion. But they were probably due to the 8GB limit of the video card, which is still able to guarantee high framerates, with ray tracing at the maximum, both in 1080p and in 1440.

To close we also tried ours SSD WD Black SN850 PCIe 4.0 from 1 TB that in CrystalDiskMark, on the MSI card reached a speed of 6976 MB / s in sequential read and 5153 MB / s in sequential write, consistently reaching excellent values for a motherboard that squeezes one of the most consumer SSDs to the bone. absolutely fast.

The MSI MAG X570S TORPEDO MAX is a motherboard that performs well even with extreme-end processors, guaranteeing overclocking margins, albeit not extreme, and offering excellent performance, not bad aesthetics and a price certainly not small but commensurate with the 'offering.
