Most of today's computers rely on connecting to the Internet. Some apps work offline, but you almost always need Wi-Fi in the end. Especially in these times when most people work from home. One of the most common problems that users face is that Windows 10 does not detect the WiFi network.
I don't know if that's more frustrating or worrying. Everyone wants their computers connected to WiFi for work or just to browse social media. We want to help you solve the problem with Windows not seeing WiFi. Let's take a look at all the steps to fix Windows 10 WiFi problems.
1. Windows 10 can't find my WiFi network, reset TCP / IP
1. Search and open Command Prompt (CMD) from the Start menu with administrator rights.
2. Give the command below.
netsh int ip reset
3. Close CMD and follow the steps in the next step to troubleshoot the network card.
Another sequence of commands that could help your computer detect and connect with WiFi is:
ipconfig / release
e
ipconfig / renew
4. Enter these two commands, one at a time. What they will do is release the current DHCP assigned IP address and assign a new one.
5. Are you experiencing the pop-up error “The WiFi does not have a valid IP configuration”? Enter the following commands one at a time.
netsh winsock reset ipconfig /release netsh int ip reset ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns
2. Troubleshoot network and internet problems
1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings and look for two options, one at a time:
- Find and fix network problems
- Find and troubleshoot your network card
2. The steps for both will remain the same. So, I'll only show one. Select one of the troubleshooting options and select Apply solution automatically and click Next.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to find out if it solves the problem. Repeat the same steps for the other troubleshooting option if the problem persists.
Wait up. There is another option to fix the WiFi issue that was released with the launch of the Creators Update. It doesn't appear in search results for some reason.
- Go to Settings> Update & Security> Troubleshoot> Internet Connections.
- Click Run the troubleshooter to start the process and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Change the network name / SSID and password
I can't give you specific steps for this solution as they may vary based on the make and model of your router. What you need to do is connect to the Internet via an ethernet cable, enter the IP address of the router in the browser 192.168.1.1 how to access the modem and change the configuration, access and change the login details. You can also check the modem manual for more details.
4. Windows 10 does not connect to the internet, forget the WiFi network
- A simple solution for Windows 10 that does not detect the WiFi network. Go to Settings> Network and Internet> Wi-Fi and click Manage known networks.
- Click once on the Wi-Fi network name and select Forget.
Note that you will need to re-connect to the WiFi network for which you will need a password. Make sure you have it.
5. Troubleshoot DHCP issues
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a process used by Windows to configure and assign an IP address to a compatible wireless device. This also includes your computer. Let's check if the service is active.
- Search and open View Network Connections.
- Right-click your network adapter and select Diagnose. This should re-enable the process if it has been disabled for some reason.
- If that doesn't work, you can try setting your IP address manually. Select Properties instead of Diagnostics in the same menu.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and click Properties.
- Select the option “Use the following IP address” and enter the values. You can try the following values, which are for Google Public DNS. Talk to your ISP if things don't work out.
Save all settings and check if your Windows 10 computer can now detect the WiFi network or not. You can always go back to defaults if things don't work out.
NOTE: Changing the number of users on DHCP can help. The upper limit is 50 and going beyond it could cause errors like the one you are facing. You will need to check your router's manual to find out how to change it.
6. Disable Firewall / Antivirus
Maybe it's the firewall that is blocking your WiFi connection.
- Open Control Panel, search for and open Windows Defender Firewall.
- Select “Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off” from the sidebar.
- It is possible to disable Windows Defender but do so only temporarily until the problem with the WiFi is resolved.
If it is already disabled because you are using an antivirus, disable the antivirus. You may need to restart your computer once.
I recommend that you check for malware using Malwarebytes.
7. Update the network drivers
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu. You can also launch it from a hidden menu that reveals itself when you press the Windows key + X shortcut.
- Double-click the Network Adapters heading and right-click the adapter to select the Update Driver option.
Here is an in-depth guide on updating drivers if you have any problems. It will teach you how to uninstall the driver and reinstall it because sometimes it works.
8. Channel width
Some users have suggested that setting the channel width value to Auto helped them solve the problem with Windows 10 not detecting the WiFi network. No harm in trying and you can change it later.
- Open Network Connections again from the Start menu. Right-click the network name to select Properties as last time, but click Configure this time.
- It needs to be set to Auto, but sometimes that option is missing. If so, you'll need to try a few options to see if any of them help. Write down the default settings before making any changes.
There may be too many routers in your area that use the same channel width, thus obstructing the network's radio waves. Changing the channel might help.
For reference purposes:
- 802.11a / ac uses the 5 GHz band.
- 802.11b / g uses the 2,4 GHz band.
- 802.11n uses either 2,4GHz or 5GHz bands.
9. Energy saving
The network adapter needs the power to do its magic. The power management settings of your Windows 10 computer may turn off the power to save battery consumption.
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu again and right-click the network adapter to select Properties. Select the Power Management tab this time.
- Uncheck the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” checkbox and save the settings. Restart your computer and check again.
10. Delete Wireless Profile
An error or bug may have been responsible for the corruption of the wireless profile.
Open CMD from the Start menu if admin rights again and give the following command.
netsh wlan delete profile name=WirelessProfileName
Replace “WirelessProfileName” with your network name and press Enter. When done, you'll reconnect to the network from scratch and Windows will automatically recreate a new profile.
11. Enable SSID broadcast
The router will broadcast the SSID or network name to nearby devices, and that's how it connects your laptop and smartphone to the network.
Open a new tab in the browser and open the IP address of the router, which is usually http://192.168.1.1: test and configure your wifi connection but it may be different in your case, so log in.
Usually, you will find the Enable SSID Broadcast option in Wireless Settings. You will need to restart your computer after saving the settings.
12. Enable the WLAN auto-configuration service
Search and open the Services app.
Find WLAN AutoConfig in the list and right-click to select Properties.
Make sure the startup type is set to automatic. Save the changes if necessary and restart the computer.
Here is a list of other services. Values are indicated in parentheses. Make sure they reflect the same on your computer.
- Network position recognition (automatic)
- Network List Service (Manual)
- Windows event log (automatic)
- Windows Update (manual)
How many problems can there be with WiFi
There are so many things that could go wrong with the WiFi network. We take such services for granted, not appreciating all the technicalities that go into making them work. After fixing the WiFi network detection error, I'm sure everything will be clearer to you.
